The Power Engineering Faculty originates from three laboratories that were part of the Mechanics Faculty of the Don Polytechnic Institute (DPI): electrical, hydraulic, thermal engines.

On the basis of their having the Department of Energy Profile: electrical, hydraulics and hydraulic machines, thermal engines, thermal power plants, which in 1924 was transferred to the premises of the energy built housing.

In 1931, when the department was divided into 4 sectoral institutes and the North Caucasus Energy Institute was established, the following departments were organized: electrical equipment of central power stations, electrical equipment of industrial enterprises and high-voltage equipment.
Issue of engineers in the field of “Electrical Engineering” and “Heat Engineering” from 1907-1933. amounted to over 250 professionals.

In 1946, the department of electrical machines and electrical engineering general singled out the Department of theoretical fundamentals and general electrical engineering from the Department of heat engines – Department of internal combustion engines. In 1948, the Department of Power stations, networks, and systems merged into a single department of electric power stations, networks and Power stations, networks, and systems. In 1949 he founded the Department of automation and remote control.

After separation from the energy faculty of the electromechanical profile departments, the following faculties remained in the faculty: hydraulics and hydraulic machines, thermal power plants, theoretical foundations and general heat engineering, power plants, networks, and systems.
In 1963, as a result of the merger of two departments, a department of the theoretical foundations of heat engineering and hydraulics was formed.
In 1969, the Department of Electrical Systems and Networks emerged from the ESSiS department. In 1972 the Department of Power Supply of Industrial Enterprises and Cities was organized.

Since 1992, the Power Engineering Faculty moved to a multilevel system of higher education – with the preparation of bachelors, engineers, and masters. In 1996, the first bachelors were graduated (53 people), in 1999 – the first masters (5 specialists).
In 1995, the research institute of power engineering was created as a unit within the university, which has the authority of a legal entity by proxy of the university. Together with the Power Engineering Faculty, they formed a unified teaching and research complex.
In 2001, the Power Engineering Institute was established on the basis of the Power Engineering Faculty in the departments of the former Faculty of Energy and the Research Institute of Energy, the director of which was V. Shulyak, who headed the department in the period 1982-2001. In 2005, the Energy Institute has renamed the Power Engineering Faculty.
